New Duns Town Trail is being launched
Discover local history by following the Duns Town Trail, which links over 30 places of architectural and historical interest
The new Duns Town Trail will be launched on Saturday 16 April with a special parade, starting at 2pm in the Market Square. Residents and visitors will get the chance to learn more about the town’s interesting and turbulent history and also see some of its notable buildings. The parade will be led by Duns Pipe Band, in its first public performance since December 2019. All are welcome.
The Rotary Club of Duns and A Heart for Duns have come together to update the original Duns Town Trail by creating an easy-to-follow self-guided walk based on a free app. This is designed to be used while walking around the town, as well as providing stand-alone education resources about the town’s history. It can be accessed from the A Heart for Duns website.
About the Town Trail
The updated Duns Town Trail is a great way to explore the town’s many interesting buildings and discover their hidden secrets. The full Town Trail covers over 30 sites and is about 5.5 kms (3 miles). It should take about two hours to complete, but if time is limited specific sites can be found by using the interactive map available in the app. The main sites are marked by a black circular plaque, and other buildings of interest are also mentioned in the app. While the plaques are not numbered and can be visited in any order, the guided walk suggests starting at the Mercat Cross in Market Square.
Background to Duns Town Trail
The original Duns Town Trail was produced in booklet form many years ago by Scottish Borders Council. The Rotary Club of Duns decided to bring it up to date, this time using an app to be used on a smartphone. A website-based app was produced by Forbes Gray, and initial revision of the text was done by Kenny McLean. A Heart for Duns then brought the project to completion by producing black plaques for the trail’s sites and an illustrated map to accompany the app. Several local volunteers have helped with the project, particularly members of Rotary and AHFD including Peter Gray, Patrick Dixon, David Philip, Derek Janes, Anne McNeil, and Sandy Donaldson. The illustrated map was created by Katie Quinn.
