Duns held its first Open Gardens Day on Sunday 22 August. Organised by Keeping Duns Blooming Marvellous and supported by Scotland’s Gardens Scheme, the overall feedback has been that it was a resounding success, with many already asking when next year’s event will be held!

The weather wasn’t too kind during the early part of the afternoon with cloud and some fairly heavy rain but it didn’t seem to stop the many gardening enthusiasts who braved the elements to come along. However, the clouds cleared, the rain stopped and the sun came out, creating perfect conditions for those who were keen to visit the 16 gardens open to the public and to see more of the town than they normally would. There was, indeed, a buzz around the town with people wandering from garden to garden, maps in hand.

Being the first time such an event had been held in the town, the organisers had no idea how many may attend and were absolutely delighted to welcome over 200 people – some travelling from as far afield as Stirling. Those serving teas and coffees were kept busy with a steady stream of customers looking to rest their weary feet for a short time and enjoy a refreshment and a chat. The plant sale was also kept busy with a good number of plants being sold on the day and many more in the days following the event.

Huge thanks must go to the garden owners who were brave enough to open their garden gates and allow fellow gardeners into their hallowed space. The gardens varied from small areas, filled with colourful bedding plants, to rambling areas of woodland, ponds, vegetable gardens, courtyards and tailored lawns. Those visiting were extremely impressed with the variety of gardens on display and the friendliness of the garden owners.

Feedback from the garden owners is that they thoroughly enjoyed answering questions and explaining why they had created the type of gardens they had. There were times during the afternoon when people were queuing outside some gardens as they were so busy.

Thanks also go to all the volunteers who helped in advance of and on the day to make it the huge success it was.

This success resulted in the amazing sum of £2,256 being raised for charity, with 60% going to local charities/ organisations:

· Borders Talking Newspapers

· Duns Mini Rugby

· ParentSpace

And 40% of the proceeds going to support Scotland’s Gardens Scheme’s charities:

· Maggie’s

· The Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland

· Perennial

The only question to be answered now is – when will next year’s Duns Open Gardens day be held?
